Three young women from Sahuarita High School and four Women-in-Transition were awarded scholarships in front of an audience packed with family, friends, and a supporting community. Since its inception in 2016, TWOQC has awarded 18 scholarships totaling more than $27,000. It is only through the generous support of TWOQC, our local business communities, and the residents of Quail Creek and Green Valley that we are able to grant the scholarships.
SAVE THE DATE… OCTOBER 13
With funds raised at this year’s upcoming October benefit, we will add to the list of accomplished women we have been able to reach out to and touch.
YOUTH ON THEIR OWN: May 20 Program
You don’t want to miss the upcoming May program so mark your calendar: May 20th at 6:30 p.m. TWOQC has invited Bethany Neumann, Director of Development for Youth On Their Own (YOTO) to be the guest speaker. Bethany will speak about the YOTO organization and how it helps the youth of Pima County. A Youth On Their Own Ambassador will share what it is like to be a student in the YOTO program. The topic is serious but you will learn about the importance of community involvement. You will be inspired by the stories of hope, commitment, tenacity and success.
Watch for the much anticipated YOTO School Supply Drive which begins in June.
MILITARY BABY SHOWER: May 18
It is time to celebrate a beautiful baby shower which is planned for active duty military at the 162nd Air National Guard on Saturday, May 18th. The babies continue to come. There are 14 boys, 15 girls, 12 babies born, 8 military moms (6 to parents both of whom are in the military), and two sets of twins. WOW, you do the math! A follow-up Friday Morning Message will be posted with pictures of this exciting and heartwarming event.
FOLKLORIC DANCERS COMING IN JUNE
Mark your calendar for the Summer Luncheon: Monday, June 24th at 11:30 a.m. Folkloric Dancers will be entertaining us and the lunch will be the ever popular Southwest Steak Salad and Chocolate Mousse Pie for dessert.
This is a ticketed event, $20 for members and $25 for guests. Tickets are available ONLINE and will be sold at the May 20th TWOQC program.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Deolinda Armijo
Deolinda was born and raised in the small town of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Her family moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico when she was a high school junior. She graduated in 1958 and then attended the University of New Mexico. PHOTO: DEOLINDA
She worked for the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs before she was recruited by the Central Intelligence Agency in the 1960s. It was around the time of the Bay of Pigs incident and she spoke, read and wrote Spanish.
After her initial training in Washington, D.C., Deolinda traveled and lived extensively overseas, working for 24 years throughout Central and South America. She also spent ten years in Europe. She speaks three languages: English, Spanish and Turkish, although she admits these days her Turkish is quite rusty.
Deolinda moved to Quail Creek in 2001. She served as Secretary/Treasurer for the Tennis Club, the Sewing Club and the Art Glass Club when they were first started. She was also the Secretary/Treasurer for the Architecture and Landscape Committee (ALC) for 17 years. Deolinda has been a member of The Women of Quail Creek for more than five years. She enjoys living in Quail Creek with everything it has to offer.
AN INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT
I have been hosting informal get-togethers at my home to meet members on a more personal basis. Also, to discuss our wonderful organization. The klatches have been great fun and I am hosting three more this month. I hope you can come to one. I try to keep the groups to fewer than twelve so we can have a genuine conversation. Don’t feel shy because we have not met. You can always come with a friend, too.
Dates:
- Friday, May 24 (9-11am) — Coffee and Goodies
- Thursday, May 30 (1-3pm) — Wine and Munchies
- Friday, May 31 (9-11am) — Coffee and Goodies
Please contact me at (520) 625-4476 or patneel1@me.com.
SPECIAL UPCOMING AUGUST 26 PROGRAM
Calling all ladies who love to entertain beautifully! The August 26th program will be a tablescape decorating competition judged by Quail Creek staff. There will be a grand prize and two additional themed prizes.
We are looking for several teams of 1-6 ladies who can rock a 4-spot table in ANY theme they choose. We are publicizing this event early to give teams time to scheme and create the ultimate tablescape to amaze and entertain us all. We have some fun tablescape theme ideas to get you started: CLICK HERE for suggestions.
In addition to the fun of haute couture for tables – we are hosting an Ice Cream Social. Hot fun in the summertime with cool treats.
So grab some fun friends or go to it on you own. Let Kathe Alves (programs@womenqc.com) know your intentions. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and tablescapers will be able to access the ballroom at least 90 minutes prior to kick-off. We are all looking forward to the fun!
2020 FASHION SHOW: A Vision of Hope
Want to get involved in this worthwhile cause and have fun at the same time? Planning for our 2020 event is underway and we need YOUR help.
Honor a survivor or loved one lost to cancer, help save lives of people in our local community and around the world. It only takes a little time to do a lot of good.
Join us at the next committee team meeting Tuesday, May 21, at 4:00 p.m. in the Kino Center Conference Room to learn about the volunteer positions and find one that matches your unique talents and interests. Winter visitors are welcomed to volunteer and need not attend this meeting or any Spring/Summer meetings to participate. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lisa Johnson at fashionshow@womenqc.com.
CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY
Honor Flight

Honor Flight #27 touched down in Tucson at 8:25 p.m. on April 24th. This beautiful letter was received from one of the veterans on the flight.
Karen Baker and Nancy Lammers (both TWOQC members and Honor Flight coordinators) returned from Washington with 80 WWII, Korean and Vietnam War veterans from a visit to the war memorials. There were 2 female veterans on the flight from the Korean War. A crowd of over 400 greeted the travelers with shouts of “thanks” and welcome home”. Thanks to all who wrote letters to the veterans for the return trip. (Photos by Pat Neel, and Peggy McGee)
Food Bank
Thanks to all who donated the 71 lbs. of groceries and $80 in checks to the Food Bank at our program on Monday, April 29th. Your generosity will help the less fortunate.
