Field Trip! This Monday, March 26
Just a reminder that our 2018 Field Trip to Tubac is this Monday. The bus will leave the Madera Clubhouse parking lot at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Please be at the Clubhouse no later than 8:45 a.m. for check-in. You might consider wearing comfortable walking shoes and possibly bringing a walking stick/pole, sun hat and sunscreen. Both destinations have gift shops, so you may want to bring cash or a credit card if you plan to do a little shopping while at the Tubac Presidio or Tumacacori Mission. And don’t forget—if you have a National Parks senior pass in your name, please bring it with a photo ID.
There have been a few last minute cancellations leaving open seats on the bus. If you wish to fill one of these seats please contact Peggy (pmcgee@cox.net) as soon as possible.
Last, but certainly not least, our famous “Baby Bottle Pass” will happen again on the bus. Your spare change and dollars will help us give our local military families a great Baby Shower in May.
Volunteer Opportunity: Sunday, April 8 – 1 Day Only!
TWOQC is partnering with the Quail Creek Cool Car Club for their 3rd Annual Car Show on Sunday, April 8. Each year this charity event supports a worthy local cause. This year Genesis House/Hands of a Friend will be receiving 100% of the proceeds from this event. Volunteers from TWOQC are needed to work at a table helping to collect the paper towels, toilet paper and Kleenex that will be donated by participants and attendees of the event.
Two to three volunteers are needed from 10:30-1:00 and two to three volunteers are needed from 1:00-3:30. Volunteers will collect the paper products and help load them into the Genesis House vehicles. Please contact Angie Werner if you can help at AngelaWerner214@yahoo.com or (402) 309-5467 (call or text).
If you can help us to help Genesis House with a donation of paper products, please bring them (paper towels, toilet paper, Kleenex, 15-gallon and 30-gallon garbage bags) to the Car Show from 11:00-3:00 in the Clubhouse parking lot. See some cool cars, eat a yummy lunch and buy some raffle tickets while you are there!
April 30th Program: “Celebration of Women”
Presenting the 2018 TWOQC Scholarship Winners!
Please join us on Monday April 30th at 6:30 p.m. for the introduction to our 2018 Scholarship Winners. This program will be open to the public (Quail Creek community and the general public) to help us celebrate the accomplishments of our high school and women-in-transition scholarship winners and meet them and their families. The program will also feature our previous winners and show what they are doing now.
TWOQC extends a huge “thank-you!” to our Quail Creek Community for their support this past year in our endeavors to raise the needed funds to be able to award these Scholarships. And to the Quail Creek Education Committee for their support and efforts towards the Kino Lecture Series program that has provided funds for our Scholarship Program.
2018 Military Families Baby Shower
We are still planning on 28 families (with 29 babies) participating this year at our baby shower on Saturday, May 19th.
The babies so far are: 14 boys, 7 girls, 8 “waiting to find out”. This year we have 5 couples where both the mom and the dad are currently serving in the military. We also have an additional 6 moms that are the military personnel totaling 11 military moms.
We are seeking donations of:
- new baby outfits/Onesies (sizes NB to 12 months)
- diapers (sizes 1-3)
- baby wipes, wash, powder, lotion, and baby blankets
If you are out shopping and near a baby department, please consider picking up a cute baby item. Even 1 item or outfit can make a big difference.
The baby shower committee has 2 donation boxes in Quail Creek: one in the Madera Clubhouse lobby, and one at the front porch of Kathi Krieg (2680 E. Sawyer Road).
The next committee planning meeting is Wednesday, April 18th at 10:00 a.m. in the Kino Conference Room.
Lecture Series Concludes
Quail Creek’s Kino Lecture Series, co-sponsored by the Quail Creek Education Committee and TWOQC’s Scholarship Committee, closed out their successful season with “American Turquoise: Collecting with Confidence.”
Jason Winfield, current owner of the Lone Mountain Turquoise Company in Tubac, shared his knowledge of the various types of turquoise from American mines. Lone Mountain is the second most valuable and collectible American turquoise. Jason donated the fees paid for private evaluations prior to the lecture as well as a large portion of his honorarium to the TWOQC Scholarship fund. This brought the total raised by the three lectures to approximately $1,800 for the fund.
Quail Creek ladies from the Educational and Scholarship Committees modeled jewelry made from Native American turquoise. (Enjoy these additional PHOTOS from the American Turquoise lecture).
Thank you, Jason Winfield! And thanks to all who attended this year’s lectures. Stay tuned. Plans are underway for the 2018-2019 lecture series benefiting the Scholarship fund. (Photo Credit: Eileen Sykora, TWOQC Photographer)
Veteran’s Clothing Drive: New Co-Chairs!
Please join me in welcoming Karen Johnson and Anne Smith as the 2018 VA Clothing Drive Co-Chairs!
The Clothing Drive is scheduled this year for October 20th and has a great planning committee in place. We are very happy to have new leaders.
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 20. The 9th Annual Homeless Veterans Clothing Drive occurs that morning. We will need your help and your donations that day.
