The Summer Luncheon is the place to be on June 24^th at the Madera Clubhouse. A festive celebration of our southwest culture will be enhanced by a delicious steak salad and chocolate mousse pie. The high point will be entertainment provided by the ever popular Ballet Folklorico. This is a ticketed event, $20 for members and $25 for guests. Tickets are available ONLINE or by contacting Bobbi Gordon (625-9353). Enjoy your favorite beverage or special prickly pear margarita when the bar opens at 11:00. The ballroom doors open at 11:30. An informative and compelling program was provided by representatives of Youth On Their Own (YOTO) at TWOQC’s May program. Bethany Neumann, Director of Development and  YOTO Ambassador, Rashel spoke to attendees. YOTO is a dropout prevention program that supports high school graduation which will lead to greater job opportunities. They have an astonishing 84% graduation rate. Newmann noted there are 2000 students in Pima County who need this support. Thirteen students in the Sahuarita area are currently being served.

Ambassador Rashel shared her chilling story about life prior to YOTO. A concerned teacher pointed the way. YOTO provided her free access to basic supplies (food, hygiene, school) plus  a monthly stipend as long as she stayed in school and maintained good grades. Rashel graduated from high school and recently completed her freshman year at the University of Arizona majoring in Family Studies. MORE INFO

TWOQC has supported YOTO since 2016 beginning with a campaign for holiday gift bags filled with blankets. Over the years support has grown to include donations of food, school supplies, gift cards, a microwave cookbook and more. During the program Jeanne Stevens presented YOTO with 16 fleece blankets embellished with decorative work done by Jeanne and friends.

The YOTO school supply drive begins in June. Watch for more information on our website and in Friday Morning Messages.

Saturday, May 18^th was a special day for the expectant families and new parents of the 162nd Air National Guard and other active military. Families arrived at the Base with their new babies to be honored by TWOQC for their service. The young families were showered with an abundance of handmade and purchased items to guarantee a great start for the little ones. The event, now in its 8^th year, is supported by TWOQC, the Quail Creek Community and lovingly planned by the Baby Shower Committee. It was magnificent in every detail. Honorees were astonished by the out pouring of gifts and expressions of “thanks”. SEE 120+ PHOTOS

This year’s baby shower statistics include:

• 29 moms
• 32 babies (3 sets of twins)
• 1400 handmade items totaling (52 different types)
• 1600 gently used items donated by the White Elephant Foundation
• *Estimated “from the heart “ volunteer hours: 3532 or 1.5 woman years (40-hr week)…yahoo!

If  you have recently unpacked your new home or just have some laying around, we want your boxes, please! Even though the event isn’t until October, the VA Homeless Clothing Drive is collecting boxes starting in June.

We really need 18 x 18 and 22 x 22 sized boxes. We will also be needing a 15 dish-pak sized and 2 wardrobe boxes with the hanger bar. You can contact our box storage coordinator, Mary Lehman, at 399-0707 to make arrangements for drop off. Any questions, please contact Tessie Hagerich at clothingdrive@womenqc.com.

Member Spotlight: Cindy Mayron

Cindy was born in San Francisco and raised in San Jose. She met Michael, who is originally from Chicago, in high school and they have been together for 52 years – married for 48 of those years. The couple have two daughters: Megan, who is married and has two children, and lives in Albany, New York and Marissa, who with her husband, lives in Shawnee, Kansas, with their three dogs. Over the years Cindy has volunteered on several boards, non-profits and was asked to write newsletters, to publicize events and she even wrote a monthly newspaper animal column. Cindy says “Writing a human-interest story or press release involves teaching and getting an editor’s attention with a unique news angle hook and by respecting their deadlines.” Cindy turned this experience into a seminar which she taught (before social media!) titled: How to Play the Media Game.

In her spare time, Cindy proofreads reports for Marissa, who is a market research consultant. Since September Cindy has volunteered as a writer for Merging Vets and Players (vetsandplayers.org). In addition to numerous men and women veterans, Cindy has interviewed several former NFL players and an Olympian medalist in Indoor Women’s Volleyball. Cindy has written articles for The Crossing and for the Green Valley News, and has recently stepped up to fill TWOQC’s 1st Vice President/Publicity position.

Cindy and Michael moved to Quail Creek after a 5-year adventure in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. They’ve been here for six years: five years in Unit 2 and one year in Unit 21.

A Farewell Bid to Oldest Member

TWOQC bid farewell to their oldest member, Quigley Robichaud. Quigley passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, May 20th at 96.

Fondly called “Quig” by her longtime friends and neighbors on Longspur Place, she is remembered for her vivaciousness, love of life, wonderful sense of humor and seeking adventure whenever possible. Patricia (Quigley) Robichaud will be missed.
