Friday Morning Message

Posted on July 14, 2017 by The Women of Quail Creek

FMM header, Carol Mutter, president, working together in our community, make a difference

This week’s Friday Morning Message:  Jeopardy in July  |  Online Member Photo Book  |  Honor Flight  |  Back to School with YOTO  |  Homeless and Hospitalized Veterans  |  Driver Needed to VA  |  2018 Fashion Show  |  Upcoming Events

July “JEOPARDY” Program

JEOPARDY is coming to Quail Creek on Monday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. Six contestants will be chosen to participate to win cash and other prizes. To become a Quail Creek Jeopardy contestant, send a brief introduction of yourself to Kathe Alves, Programs Chair at «programs@womenqc.com».

Contestants will be selected the night of the event. The audience will have a chance to win prizes as well. Brush up on Arizona and Quail Creek trivia!

Online Member Photo Book

The Photo Book is growing with nearly 210 photos! New member headshots have been added from the June luncheon. If you are a current (paid through 2017) TWOQC member and would like your headshot included in the online photo book, please come to the monthly program camera-ready or email a headshot photo of yourself (Jpeg format) to the Webmaster at «webmaster@womenqc.com».

The online photo album can be viewed here: «OPEN PHOTO BOOK».

We are missing a name for one photo from the June luncheon. If you are this person or know who she is, please email her name to the Webmaster. Thank you!

Honor Flight #23 – Coming in September

Honor Flight #23 out of Tucson will be honoring 66 WWII, Korean and Vietnam Veterans with an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC to see the WWII and Korean Memorial and the Vietnam Wall built in their honor. The focus is about thanking our veterans for the service and sacrifice they made so many years ago for the freedoms we enjoy today. On the return flight they all have a surprise of mail call – the same kind that kept their spirits alive during the war. These notes and letters are a valuable and tangible keepsake of their trip.

Write letters and notes to “Dear Hero” and write their first name and last initial on the envelope. Please do not seal the envelope due to last-minute changes, and include a few extras “To A Veteran” if you would like. Letters and notes may be delivered to Kay Robinson at 898 N. Kenneth Dr. no later than August 15 or you may bring them to the July program. Thank you for honoring our veterans.

The following name has been added to the «Honor Flight List of Names»: Bill H · Tucson, AZ · Army, Navy, Air Force · Korea, Vietnam WWII

Back to School with YOTO

If you read the ads in this week’s newspapers, you see that back to school sales have begun. What a great time to help YOTO students with new supplies. Backpacks, calculators and everything else seem to be on sale now. Help us help YOTO by putting things from «THIS LIST» in the collection bin at the Madera Clubhouse.

And, we are still looking for easy, microwaveable recipes for the YOTO/TWOQC cookbook. Recipes can be submitted to «yoto@womenqc.com». To see a list of food that is always in the YOTO pantry, click here: «OPEN PANTRY LIST».

Homeless & Hospitalized Veterans

If you had a 4th of July party and have leftover disposable utensils, cups, plates, or napkins, please consider donating them to the VA. They are used when the homeless veterans come into the VA for showers, haircuts, counseling.

The VA could still use some diapers, wipes and other baby items for a girl due in early August. Her mom is a formerly homeless veteran so this child has nothing going for her financially as she comes into the world.

If you have already received more 2018 calendars—wall and pocket— than you can possibly use, please don’t throw them in the trash. The veterans in the nursing home on the VA campus would really like to have them. Greetings cards, note pads, playing cards and books are used by the hospitalized veterans.

You may bring donations to the program on July 31 or drop them at Peggy’s house, 1908 E. Longspur Place at any time. «map» If you wish a receipt for tax purposes, please include your name, address and phone number and approximate value of your items with your donation.

Driver Needed to Deliver Furniture For Homeless Veterans

The VA has advised that they are no longer able to pick up furniture donations. We have two members who have small sofas to donate. If there is anyone with a pick-up truck who is willing to pick up the items and take them to the VA (Monday to Friday only), please contact Peggy at «pastpresident@womenqc.com» or 207-6188.

2018 Fashion Show – Colors of Cancer

As always, additional help is needed and welcomed to make our February Fashion Show and Luncheon another fantastic event to benefit the American Cancer Society. Back office work continues in these monsoon days. A couple of additional volunteers came forward and more ideas are being discussed for decorating the room in the Colors of Cancer.

Peach is the color representing uterine cancer. Of course, early detection is key and the risk of this type of cancer greatly increases as we age. At the onset, there may be no symptoms and therefore we need to pay attention to our bodies. As most of you know, women over 50 have the greatest risk. Please contact Carol Shelton «fashionshow@womenqc.com» if you would like to know more or volunteer for this great event.
