IN MEMORY

Recently a caring and noble initiative occurred on behalf of Quigley Robichaud, member of TWOQC recently deceased. Friends and neighbors of Quigley created a lovely memorial gift and provided the Scholarship Committee with additional funds for their 2020 awards. Many thanks to Quigley’s friends for their support.

YOTO

The Youth on Their Own “Back to School” drive has begun. The goal is to supply each of the 2000 youths in the program with a back pack filled with needed supplies. The Women of Quail Creek will be collecting school supplies through August.

Donations can be dropped off inside the main entrance of the Madera Clubhouse and at our monthly programs. The most needed supplies include full-sized backpacks, mechanical pencils, highlighters, markers, colored pencils, composition notebooks, index cards, folders and binders.

Gift card donations of $10 or $25 are happily accepted. (Please contact Sue Obremski at yoto@womenqc.com to arrange for your gift card donations to go directly to her in lieu of placing them in the donation box.)

All donations are greatly appreciated. We can make a huge difference in the lives of the YOTO students. Thank you for participating.

HONOR FLIGHT LIAISON FOR TWOQC

(click/tap image to enlarge)

Honor Flight Southern Arizona provides WWII, Vietnam and Korean War Veterans the opportunity to see their national memorials in Washington DC. It is supported by TWOQC both financially and by a letter writing initiative intended to recreate the mail calls women and men looked forward to during their service. During the return trip “mail call” is announced and a package of letters is distributed to each veteran. Mail Call is personal, often emotional and extraordinarily important. It is intended to be kept secret.

Kay Robinson has been TWOQC’s loyal Honor Flight liaison for nine years and our coordinator for mail call. She and her husband Ray will be moving to La Posada in the near future. TWOQC is seeking an individual or two who will coordinate the letter writing campaigns. Honor Flights occur twice a year, fall and spring. Kay is more than willing to provide training.

Kay says, “It has been an honor to be a part of letting our past military know how much their service to our country has meant to preserve our freedom by writing and soliciting letters of thanks.”  MORE INFORMATION

MEMBERS CORNER

The June New Member Wine and Welcome Party was a fun afternoon spent meeting these fantastic ladies: Teresa Buttelman, Marie Duncan, Leslie Fellner, Carolyn Fisher, Penny Henry, Jane Herum, Sandi Hrovatin, Michelle Medley, Donna Roland, Marty Sage, Jean Spanbauer and Cathy Swanson. Thank you for joining us as we met new friends, learned about TWOQC, and enjoyed sipping a refreshing glass of sangria. Enjoy these party pix snapped by our club photographer, Eileen Sykora.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST MEMBERS!

Marie Duncan, Joyce Finn, Donna Roland, and Lisa Stilson.

Member Spotlight: Karen Johnson

Karen has had two careers in her lifetime. First, she was in print media for 30 years. Her family had a history of being in this business as Karen proudly represented the third generation. During the initial four years, she worked for the Los Angeles Times from September 1969 through to September 1973. Karen received her Journeyman certificate for Advertising Service Specialist on May 4,1973. The certificate afforded Karen numerous jobs with newspapers. Later, a move to Colorado resulted in 14 years of work as a group publisher. In Denver Karen ran five weekly newspapers and for nine years she was co-owner and publisher of the Aurora Publishing Co.

During Karen’s second profession she worked on projects for Commercial and Government clients as a Project Manager, taking a project from concept to finish. Karen tackled any and everything which included offices, warehouses, call centers auditoriums, dining halls…

Karen’s active participation in numerous professional and governmental organizations included Aurora Chamber of Commerce (6 Years) – Past Chairman of the Board; Aurora Public Library Board of Trustees (10 Years) – Past Chairman; Aurora Education Foundation (15 Years) – Past Chairman; Rotary Club of Aurora (22 Years) – Past President and Homeowners Association Board – Secretary/Treasurer.

Karen and her husband Gary retired from Denver, Colorado and moved to Tucson before moving to Quail Creek in February of 2016. Between them they have four children and nine grandchildren. The couple are avid bicycle riders. They have been riding tandem bikes since 1996, riding across the USA in 2001, one of their bucket list wishes. They started in Newport Beach, CA, ending in Norfolk, VA. It took them a total of 42 days of riding, taking one day off a week. The couple rode 3339.2 miles, averaging 82 miles a day. Karen’s activities include being the Past Co-Chairman of the TWOQC VA Homeless Clothing Drive in 2018; QC Cool Car Club; QC Glass Club; Cyclist of QC and Unit 16E Unit Rep. “We love this community because of the people who live here, great activities and cycling year-round.”  PREVIOUS MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS

CONNECTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY

FOOD FOR THE TROOPS

There will be a collection of grocery items for the junior enlisted troops of the 162nd Fighter Wing at the luncheon on the 24th. That’s the AF National Guard unit we support so generously with our baby shower. Troop favorites include Chef Boyardee products; breakfast bars; Pop Tarts; chicken noodle, vegetable beef, tomato soups; Hamburger/Tuna Helper; peanut butter and jelly; pasta sauce; snacks.

Please bring donations to the luncheon and place them on the table in the hallway near the front door of the Ballroom. Donations may also be dropped in the bin in the lobby from July 1-4.

HOMELESS AND HOSPITALIZED VETERANS

The VA is still requesting 2019 calendars, note cards, playing cards and puzzle books for the hospitalized veterans. The homeless veterans especially like to receive bottled water, sunscreen and Chapstick along with unopened travel-sized toiletries at this time of year. There will be a table at the rear of the Ballroom for donations.
